Scotland’ largest independent merchant joins Buildbase
Scotland’s largest independent timber and builders merchant, John Fleming & Co Ltd, has joined Buildbase. The eight branches, which trade in mainland Scotland, Shetland and Orkney, will continue to trade under their existing names.
John Fleming & Co Ltd has branches in Aberdeen; Inverness; Elgin; Banchory; Kirkwall (Orkney Islands); Grangemouth; Lerwick (Shetland Islands, trading as Hay & Co) and Dundee (trading as Bell & Sime).
Mark Fleming of John Fleming said: “I am very pleased that Grafton Group is the purchaser as it is a well-managed and entrepreneurial business which has an excellent track record in developing its acquisitions and this must be to the benefit of all who work here.
I know that Buildbase has plans for significant investment in the Fleming business.
“There may be some sadness that John Fleming is changing hands after 130 years of family ownership but I am confident that Buildbase is a good home for the business.”
Kevin Middleton, Buildbase chief executive, said: “We are delighted that this well-known and highly-respected family business will be joining Buildbase. We are pleased to welcome all members of staff, many of whom have worked at John Fleming for the majority of their careers.”
The previous management team of Mark Fleming, Colin Birrell and Garry Davidson are leaving the business. Ken McLelland becomes regional director (John Fleming) and Barclay Sinclair continues as sales director.
